# Drawing Symbol Practice: Welds and Dimensions

Practice ten illustrated welding and dimension symbols with explained answers, local progress, missed-question review, and a printable worksheet.

## Recognize the notation before using the number

These original fictional diagrams practice five welding callouts and five dimension notations. They are not to scale and deliberately omit the full information needed to fabricate a connection. Welding examples follow the AWS-style arrangement described in the linked manufacturer reference. Other standards can use different conventions; establish the governing drawing legend and specification first.

Choose an answer, read its explanation, and revisit items whose latest answer was incorrect. Progress is saved only in this browser when storage is available. First-attempt results remain separate from later practice. This is a learning exercise, not a competency certificate.

Symbol 1 of 10

## A triangle at the reference line

Read the answer and explanation

An arrow-side fillet weld. The triangle identifies a fillet weld. Below the reference line means the arrow side in this AWS-style notation.

Symbol 2 of 10

## The flag at the junction

Read the answer and explanation

Make the weld in the field. The flag identifies a field weld. It does not authorize field work or resolve project approval requirements.

Symbol 3 of 10

## A circle at the junction

Read the answer and explanation

Weld all around the indicated joint. This circle denotes welding all around the indicated joint, not every joint in the drawing.

Symbol 4 of 10

## Information in the tail

Read the answer and explanation

Providing a supplementary reference. A tail can carry a process, specification, or other reference. Obtain the referenced instruction before relying on it.

Symbol 5 of 10

## Two numbers after the weld symbol

Read the answer and explanation

Center-to-center pitch. The first number is segment length; the second is center-to-center pitch. Here those values are 2 and 6 inches.

Symbol 6 of 10

## A crossed circle before a dimension

Read the answer and explanation

Diameter across the circle. The diameter symbol identifies the full distance across a circular feature through its center. A 22 mm diameter corresponds to an 11 mm radius. It does not identify the bolt size, hole purpose, or applicable tolerance by itself; read those from the rest of the drawing.

Symbol 7 of 10

## R before a curved-feature dimension

Read the answer and explanation

A radius of 30 mm. R introduces a radius: the distance from a circular arc’s center to the curve. It is not the total width across the corresponding circle. Locate the leader’s target and confirm the drawing units and tolerance before using the number.

Symbol 8 of 10

## Arrowheads between extension lines

Read the answer and explanation

The dimension line and its value. A dimension line carries a value between its indicated limits. Extension lines locate those limits relative to the object. Read the stated dimension rather than measuring this illustrative screen image, which is not to scale.

Symbol 9 of 10

## A plus/minus value

Read the answer and explanation

99.5 to 100.5 mm. The plus/minus value gives equal variation above and below the nominal dimension. Subtract 0.5 from 100 for the lower limit and add 0.5 for the upper limit. This example describes one dimension; it does not override other fit, geometry, or project requirements.

Symbol 10 of 10

## An arc between two edges

Read the answer and explanation

The angle between indicated directions. In this dimension callout, the degree sign identifies angular measure. The arc shows the directions involved; it is not a length dimension. Check which faces, edges, or centerlines the callout actually references before transferring an angle to a part.

## Use the whole drawing

A familiar symbol is only one part of an instruction. Locate its leader or dimension limits, confirm units, check referenced details, and read the applicable notes. A field-weld flag does not tell you whether access, sequence, procedure, or inspection has been resolved. A hole diameter does not by itself establish the fastener or hole classification. If information conflicts, preserve the references and ask the responsible project team to clarify them.

The diagrams on this page were drawn for these exercises; they are not copied client details. The DOE handbook is an archived educational reference, not a statement of current project requirements. Consult the current governing standard through its publisher when performing real work. Can I use this page without JavaScript?

Yes. Each illustration, question, and expandable explanation remains readable. Interactive scoring, filtering, and saved progress require JavaScript.

Why did my first-attempt score not increase after correcting an answer?

The first-attempt score records your original submission. The latest result identifies what to revisit next. Reset practice if you want a fresh set, or keep the history to see which symbols initially needed work.

Can I restore progress on another device?

Use the [Backup center](https://www.quantumsteeldesign.com/backup-center/) to export a complete archive, then preview and restore its Drawing symbol practice collection on the other device. The standalone progress copy is also readable JSON for your own records.
