# Structural Steel Bolting: Joints, Holes, and Verification

Read the complete bolted-joint requirement instead of inferring connection behavior from bolt diameter, hardware appearance, or shop habit.

A structural bolted joint is an information system: fastener group, hole type, connected material, faying surfaces, required joint condition, installation method, verification, and inspection must agree.

Direct answer

## What is the difference between snug-tightened, pretensioned, and slip-critical joints?

Snug-tightened joints bring connected plies into firm contact; pretensioned joints require specified minimum bolt pretension; slip-critical joints add a defined slip-resistance requirement at the faying surfaces.

The joint condition is a design and specification requirement. Bolt grade, diameter, or a tension-control spline does not determine the condition by itself. Use the current RCSC Specification, AISC Specification, project documents, and qualified design information.

Direct answer

## How do standard, oversized, and slotted holes differ?

The governing requirements distinguish standard, oversized, short-slotted, and long-slotted holes because clearance, movement, bearing, slip behavior, washers, and permitted applications can differ.

Show the hole type explicitly. For slotted holes, show direction clearly and verify it against the intended force and movement context. Do not substitute a different type merely because it is easier to assemble.

Direct answer

## What information belongs on a bolted connection detail?

The detail should communicate the required bolt group, fastener specification and size, hole type and orientation, connected material, joint condition, faying-surface requirements, washers where required, and project-specific installation or inspection notes.

- Coordinate edge distances, spacing, access, and member geometry.

- Distinguish shop and field work.

- Preserve protected-zone, fatigue, or seismic requirements when applicable.

- Resolve conflicts between typical details, schedules, and specific callouts.

- Keep responsibility for connection design explicit.

Direct answer

## Can installation quality be verified from appearance alone?

No. Verification depends on the specified joint, approved installation method, pre-installation verification, inspection requirements, and the evidence required by the governing documents.

For example, a severed spline on a tension-control bolt does not independently establish that every requirement for a properly installed pretensioned joint was satisfied. Qualified personnel must follow the applicable procedure and acceptance criteria.

Practice with a fictional example

## Build a bolt-information checklist

A training detail names a bolt diameter, but the joint requirements and hole information are on other project documents. Diameter alone is not enough to prepare a complete connection record.

- Locate the specified bolt assembly and the governing joint requirements.

- Record hole type, any slot direction, and the referenced installation/inspection requirements.

- Separate missing information from information that has been explicitly provided.

### What a useful result looks like

The exercise should produce references, not a guessed installation procedure. Use the edition of the RCSC specification and other standards adopted by the project. A drawing shorthand or a previous job’s practice does not establish the requirements for this joint.
