# Steel Material Cost Estimator

Estimate material costs from a steel takeoff using your own price per pound or kilogram, waste allowance, coating rate, freight, and additional costs.

## Start with a material takeoff

Import a takeoff JSON file or copy the current list saved by the [material takeoff builder](https://www.quantumsteeldesign.com/material-takeoff/). This creates an independent estimate; later takeoff changes do not update it automatically.

Import takeoff or cost estimate JSONNo takeoff selected.

## Estimated cost

| Shape | Net weight | Material + waste | Coating | Subtotal |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |

## What the estimate includes

Material cost = nominal weight × material rate × (1 + waste percentage / 100). Coating cost = net nominal weight × coating rate. Freight and other costs are added once. All rates and allowances come from you; no supplier prices or exchange rates are fetched.

Nominal weights are a reference, and actual purchased weights and costs can differ. This tool does not infer grades, supplier minimums, fabrication labor, taxes, fees, or coating surface area. Add known costs explicitly and confirm quantities and supplier quotations. This is an estimate, not a quotation or engineering approval.

Calculations and files remain on this device. Save is explicit. Export backups for work you need to retain; browser storage can be cleared. [Project snapshots](https://www.quantumsteeldesign.com/project-dashboard/) keep independent copies.

## Explain the assumptions behind a material estimate

Use a checked takeoff as the quantity source and enter your own price assumptions. The estimator separates material, coating, freight, and other costs so you can see why the total changed when a quantity or rate changes.

### Set up the estimate

- Copy the takeoff saved in this browser or import a takeoff JSON file. Check the row and piece counts before pricing.

- Choose the currency label and whether rates are per pound or per kilogram. Enter a default material rate and any shape-specific overrides.

- Set the material waste allowance, coating rate, freight total, and other costs. Calculate, review each shape subtotal, and save the estimate explicitly.

### Worked example with illustrative rates

For four W18X35 pieces, each 20 ft long, the net nominal weight is 2,800 lb. Assume a material rate of 2.00 per lb, 10% waste, coating at 0.10 per lb, freight of 100, and other costs of 50. These are demonstration inputs, not current supplier prices.

| Component | Calculation | Amount |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Material including waste | 2,800 × 2.00 × 1.10 | 6,160 |
| Coating on net weight | 2,800 × 0.10 | 280 |
| Freight and other costs | 100 + 50 | 150 |
| Total | 6,160 + 280 + 150 | 6,590 |

### Check what a changed total means

Waste increases the material allowance; coating still uses net weight. A blank shape override uses the default rate, while an explicit zero uses zero. Changing the weight unit converts entered rates to preserve the cost. Changing the currency label only changes the label; it does not perform an exchange-rate conversion.

The copied takeoff stays independent. If quantities change in the builder, copy or import them again and review any reset shape overrides. Use JSON to retain editable assumptions, CSV or print for a readable estimate, and a named [project snapshot](https://www.quantumsteeldesign.com/project-dashboard/) to preserve a particular pricing stage. Record supplier, date, and excluded costs in the project's notes before using an estimate in a wider discussion.
