Capability studies

# Structural steel detailing samples and fabrication packages.

These hypothetical packages demonstrate the intended modeling, drawing, and
coordination approach across common steel scopes.

Illustrative samples

## Transparent structural steel sample work by design.

The studies below are not completed client projects, testimonials, or claims of
past performance. Project names, quantities, and conditions are fictional examples
built to show capability and expected deliverables.

Not client work

## Light industrial frame package

A hypothetical single-story fabrication building used to demonstrate a clean
model-to-drawing workflow for repetitive rigid frames, bracing, girts, and framed
openings.

Example scale

24,000 sq ft

Example tonnage

110 tons

Primary scope

Structural frame

### Package would include

- SDS2 model setup with grids, elevations, and member orientation.

- Anchor-rod, framing, roof-bracing, and wall-framing plans.

- Shop drawings for columns, rafters, braces, and framed openings.

- RFI log for interface conditions and missing design information.

Openings & access

- Framing plans and sections

- Beam and column shop drawings

- Deck-edge and opening coordination

## Stair, landing & guard package

A hypothetical egress stair used to show stringer geometry, landing support,
guard transitions, and field-dimension hold points.

Example scope

3 flights

Focus

Miscellaneous metals

- Stair and landing plans

- Stringer, tread, rail, and post details

- Field-verification notes and embeds

What the studies demonstrate

## See the structural steel detailing process before the first contract.

01

### Scope control

Primary steel, miscellaneous metals, interfaces, exclusions, and hold points are separated early.

02

### Drawing hierarchy

Plans, sections, details, and member sheets are organized around how information moves through review and fabrication.

03

### Coordination trail

Open questions and revisions are documented so decisions remain visible when the model changes.

Worked example · fictional quantities

## Follow one revision through a material record

This example demonstrates an information check. The members and lengths are invented; no design capacity or completed client outcome is implied.

Assume a preliminary list contains four W18X35 beams, each 20 feet long. The designation's nominal linear weight is 35 lb/ft, as shown in the [AISC-derived W18X35 reference](https://www.quantumsteeldesign.com/steel-tools/shapes/w18x35/). The starting list therefore contains 80 feet and 2,800 pounds of nominal member weight.

| Issue | Recorded members | Total length | Nominal weight |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| A | Four beams at 20 ft | 80 ft | 2,800 lb |
| B | Two beams at 20 ft; two at 21 ft | 82 ft | 2,870 lb |
| Difference | Two affected beam records | +2 ft | +70 lb |

The arithmetic is only one check. A useful revision record also identifies the two affected marks, the drawing issue authorizing the change, whether any material was already ordered or cut, and which lists or sheets need to be superseded. Connection material, fabrication allowances, coatings, procurement lengths, and actual shipping weight are outside this simplified calculation.

### Source record

Keep the original list and revised issue separately identifiable. Record the source sheet or response that establishes the new length; do not overwrite the source trail with an unexplained total.

### Review record

Compare changed quantities and lengths, then inspect related connections, references, and scope holds under the project's review process. A small weight difference does not mean the change has little coordination impact.

### Handoff record

State the issue, affected marks, superseded files, unresolved items, and recipient. Keep nominal takeoff quantities distinct from the purchasing or cutting decisions that follow them.

You can enter this fictional list in the [material takeoff](https://www.quantumsteeldesign.com/material-takeoff/), save issue snapshots in a [project dashboard](https://www.quantumsteeldesign.com/project-dashboard/), and assemble the chosen records in a [handoff package](https://www.quantumsteeldesign.com/project-handoff/). The [process page](https://www.quantumsteeldesign.com/process/) explains where accountable review belongs.
