Project flow

# A controlled structural steel detailing process.

Good steel detailing starts before modeling. Plans, specs, addenda, schedule, standards, and expectations all shape the first good decision.

Quantum Steel Design keeps the process plain so risks show up early and deliverables stay useful.

1

## Establish the document basis

Start with a non-confidential scope description. Once file-sharing and project terms are established, identify the plans, specifications, addenda, fabrication standards, and issue dates that define the work.

Record missing sheets, ambiguous model status, and information still expected from others. Keep source documents identifiable so later answers can be connected to the requirement they change.

2

## Agree on scope and the first review point

Define the members and interfaces included in the package, the required outputs, software environment, review responsibilities, and intended sequence. List exclusions and holds explicitly.

A useful early review can cover grids, elevations, piece-mark conventions, typical drawing presentation, and one representative interface. Its purpose is to settle repeatable decisions before they are repeated throughout the model.

3

## Develop the 3D steel model

Connect model development, drawing preparation, and coordination questions to the controlled source set. Where requirements conflict, record the affected location and request a decision rather than silently selecting an assumption.

Track each answer into the model and dependent documents. Preserve open questions and held areas so a completed-looking drawing cannot conceal an unresolved requirement.

4

## Issue shop drawings and control changes

Identify the package scope, source revisions, included files, review status, outstanding exceptions, and intended recipient. The people assigned authority by the project determine approval and release.

After a change, identify affected outputs and superseded files. Confirm that the recipient can distinguish the current issue from an earlier package, including any work already ordered, fabricated, or erected.

Illustrative coordination example

## A revised opening changes more than one drawing

This fictional example explains the information flow. It is not a completed QSD project or a construction instruction.

### Identify the change

A revised plan moves an equipment opening beside a steel beam. Record the old and new sheet issues, opening location, affected beam mark, and related details. An earlier shop sheet may still reflect the original opening.

### Ask for the missing decision

If the revision does not establish the required framing or connection information, describe the conflict in an RFI. Keep the affected scope visible as a hold while clearly separating work that is unaffected.

### Follow the answer into the deliverables

Once the assigned project authority provides the direction, identify the model objects, shop sheets, erection references, and material information that need revision. Record the checked issue and communicate which earlier files are superseded.

Keep the record usable

## What a handoff should let the next person answer

- Which source issue and defined scope does this package represent?

- Which files are included, and which earlier files do they replace?

- What was reviewed, what is unresolved, and who owns the next decision?

- Is the information for coordination, review, pricing, or an authorized production release?

- Who received the package, and where is the record of the handoff?

Their completed fields do not replace a project's approval process.
