28 AISC v16.0 records

# AISC American Standard beams (S).

An S-shape is a hot-rolled, doubly symmetric beam with proportions and flange geometry different from a W-shape. It is identified by nominal depth and weight per foot.

## Common context

Common project roles include beams, monorails, crane-related or industrial framing, and existing-building work where the S series is specified or matched.

## Detailing watch

Check tapered flange geometry, connection surface, gage, fit-up, availability, and avoid substituting a W-shape solely because depth and weight appear similar.

## How to read the S records

The S designation carries a depth series and weight per foot. Actual d, bf and the web and flange thicknesses distinguish one row from nearby sections.

S flanges have geometry that a sharp-corner outline simplifies. Check the controlling rolled-shape and detailing information before using the export at a connection surface.

This dataset contains 28 S records, with nominal weights from 5.7 to 121 lb/ft and listed depth values from 3 to 24.5 in. These ranges describe the published records, not current supplier inventory or a selection recommendation.

Start with the exact designation, open its full record, then compare only the dimensions and properties relevant to your task. For example, [S12X40.8](https://www.quantumsteeldesign.com/steel-tools/shapes/s12x40-8/) lists 40.8 lb/ft, 11.9 in² area, Ix = 270 in⁴ and Iy = 13.5 in⁴. The x and y labels retain the database axes; their values do not establish allowable loads.

The [AISC v16.0 workbook Readme](https://www.aisc.org/aisc/publications/steel-construction-manual/aisc-shapes-database-v160/) defines the variables and shape figures. This directory uses the US customary record; the comparison tool converts displayed units. Check the required edition and product specification before transferring data.

Worked quantity example

## Nominal weight for S12X40.8

Assume 3 pieces, each 20 ft (6.096 m) long. This is a hypothetical quantity example, not a stock-length or lifting recommendation.

| Quantity | Calculation | Nominal pounds | Kilogram equivalent |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| One 20 ft piece | 20 ft × 40.8 lb/ft | 816 lb | 370.131 kg |
| 3 pieces | 3 × 816 lb | 2,448 lb | 1,110.394 kg |

Conversion: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg; displayed results are rounded. This multiplication excludes connection plates, bolts, weld metal, coatings, cutting allowances and actual material variation.
