# C vs MC Steel Channels: What Is the Difference?

Understand the difference between American Standard C channels and miscellaneous MC channels, including geometry, connection dimensions, properties, and substitutions.

What you will learn

- C: American Standard channel.

- MC: Miscellaneous channel.

- Depth: First number.

- LB/FT: Second number.

Practical context

## How the steel information fits the project workflow

MC does not mean a material grade; it identifies the miscellaneous-channel family.

Compare actual dimensions, material availability, section properties, and engineering requirements.

## What does the family prefix leave unsaid?

Two channel records can have similar nominal depth while belonging to different families. A drawing shortcut that omits the prefix can therefore lose part of the member identity.

Preserve the exact C or MC designation and compare the actual dimensions, weight, and section properties. Family membership describes the reference shape; it does not establish availability, material grade, or interchangeability on a project.

### Try it with a sample

Choose one C and one MC record and write down the full designation before comparing their dimensions.

Examples are fictional learning exercises. This companion text adds context to the video; the transcript below records the narration.

- C and M C shapes both look like channels, but the letters are not interchangeable.

- C means American Standard channel. M C identifies the miscellaneous-channel series, not a material grade.

- For both families, the first number is nominal depth and the second is nominal pounds per foot.

- A C ten by twenty is ten inches deep with a two point seven four inch flange.

- An M C twelve by thirty-one is twelve inches deep with a three point six seven inch flange.

- M C is not simply a heavier C. Webs, flanges, slopes, gages, centroids, and properties can differ.

- Before substituting, compare the actual geometry, properties, availability, connections, and required approval.

- Compare channels quickly with the free Quantum Steel Design shape reference.
