# Galvanized, Painted, or Bare Steel: Read the Finish Requirement

Compare galvanized, painted, and bare structural steel finishes and learn why finish selection affects detailing, fabrication, venting, drainage, masking, repair, and handling.

What you will learn

- SYSTEM: Identify the specified finish.

- SCOPE: Know which steel and surfaces are included.

- PREP: Coordinate fabrication and surface preparation.

- REPAIR: Define handling and field touch-up requirements.

Practical context

## How finish requirements affect steel detailing and fabrication

Galvanized, painted, fireproofed, exposed, and uncoated steel can require different material handling, venting or drainage details, surface preparation, masking, fabrication sequence, and repair information.

Model colors and drawing styles are not specifications. Use current contract documents, finish schedules, approved substitutions, and manufacturer or project requirements.

Companion reading and practice

## Can the finish be traced to a source?

A training model colors two assemblies differently, while the specification names the finish and the surfaces to which it applies. The colors are display choices, not the governing requirement.

Make a finish record that connects the member or assembly, the specified system, included or excluded surfaces, and the relevant note. Record questions about preparation, handling, and repair for the responsible project team. Do not select a coating system or add fabrication details from the model color alone.

### Try it with a sample

Choose a fictional mark and write its finish source and one unanswered question in the project notes.

Examples are fictional learning exercises. This companion text adds context to the video; the transcript below records the narration.

## Galvanized, painted, and bare structural steel transcript

The visible transcript makes the video content available to people and search systems without requiring playback.

- Galvanized, painted, or bare is not just a color setting in the steel model.

- The specified finish can affect surface preparation, fabrication sequence, handling, inspection, and repair.

- Start with the current specifications, finish schedules, drawing notes, approved substitutions, and exact scope.

- Define included members and surfaces, along with masking, contact surfaces, fireproofing, and architectural exposure.

- Galvanizing can also require coordinated venting, drainage, distortion planning, and repair details.

- AI can compare finish codes across records, but it cannot infer a requirement from model color.

- Carry the finish through drawings, material lists, purchasing, production, shipping, field work, and quality records.

- Connect project finish information to production with Quantum Steel Design.
