Common context
Common project roles include deep foundations, pile-supported structures, retaining systems, marine work, and heavy civil or industrial foundations.
22 AISC v16.0 records
An HP-shape is a hot-rolled bearing-pile section proportioned for driven foundation service. Its geometry is intended to perform as a pile and differs from ordinary building-column selection even when the cross-section looks similar to a wide-flange shape.
Common project roles include deep foundations, pile-supported structures, retaining systems, marine work, and heavy civil or industrial foundations.
Coordinate pile points, splices, cutoff elevations, driving criteria, corrosion allowance, cap or base connections, handling, and the geotechnical and structural requirements that control the installation.
Use the directory as a reference
HP is the bearing-pile series. Read actual depth, flange width and web and flange thicknesses alongside nominal weight when preparing a material reference.
The section table does not provide pile capacity, length, driving criteria, splice requirements or geotechnical assumptions. Those remain separate project information.
This dataset contains 22 HP records, with nominal weights from 36 to 204 lb/ft and listed depth values from 8.02 to 18.3 in. These ranges describe the published records, not current supplier inventory or a selection recommendation.
Start with the exact designation, open its full record, then compare only the dimensions and properties relevant to your task. For example, HP14X102 lists 102 lb/ft, 30.1 in² area, Ix = 1,050 in⁴ and Iy = 380 in⁴. The x and y labels retain the database axes; their values do not establish allowable loads.
The AISC v16.0 workbook Readme defines the variables and shape figures. This directory uses the US customary record; the comparison tool converts displayed units. Check the required edition and product specification before transferring data.
Worked quantity example
Assume 3 pieces, each 20 ft (6.096 m) long. This is a hypothetical quantity example, not a stock-length or lifting recommendation.
| Quantity | Calculation | Nominal pounds | Kilogram equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| One 20 ft piece | 20 ft × 102 lb/ft | 2,040 lb | 925.328 kg |
| 3 pieces | 3 × 2,040 lb | 6,120 lb | 2,775.985 kg |
Conversion: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg; displayed results are rounded. This multiplication excludes connection plates, bolts, weld metal, coatings, cutting allowances and actual material variation. Use the material takeoff for your own lengths and quantities.
