Common context
Common project roles include specialty edge framing, equipment and industrial supports, stair or platform framing, and conditions requiring a particular channel proportion.
40 AISC v16.0 records
An MC-shape is a hot-rolled miscellaneous channel whose proportions differ from the standard C series. It remains an open, singly symmetric section and should be identified by its exact designation and properties.
Common project roles include specialty edge framing, equipment and industrial supports, stair or platform framing, and conditions requiring a particular channel proportion.
Do not substitute a C-shape from nominal depth alone. Verify exact flange, web, gage, slope, availability, and connection geometry from the controlling record.
Use the directory as a reference
MC is its own channel series. Compare actual flange width and web thickness instead of treating an MC and a C with a similar depth as interchangeable.
Keep centroid, shear-center offset, toe direction and connection access together when passing the record to another tool or drawing.
This dataset contains 40 MC records, with nominal weights from 6.5 to 58 lb/ft and listed depth values from 3 to 18 in. These ranges describe the published records, not current supplier inventory or a selection recommendation.
Start with the exact designation, open its full record, then compare only the dimensions and properties relevant to your task. For example, MC10X8.4 lists 8.4 lb/ft, 2.46 in² area, Ix = 31.9 in⁴ and Iy = 0.326 in⁴. The x and y labels retain the database axes; their values do not establish allowable loads.
The AISC v16.0 workbook Readme defines the variables and shape figures. This directory uses the US customary record; the comparison tool converts displayed units. Check the required edition and product specification before transferring data.
Worked quantity example
Assume 3 pieces, each 20 ft (6.096 m) long. This is a hypothetical quantity example, not a stock-length or lifting recommendation.
| Quantity | Calculation | Nominal pounds | Kilogram equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| One 20 ft piece | 20 ft × 8.4 lb/ft | 168 lb | 76.204 kg |
| 3 pieces | 3 × 168 lb | 504 lb | 228.611 kg |
Conversion: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg; displayed results are rounded. This multiplication excludes connection plates, bolts, weld metal, coatings, cutting allowances and actual material variation. Use the material takeoff for your own lengths and quantities.
