51 AISC v16.0 records

AISC Structural pipe sections.

A PIPE entry describes a circular section using nominal pipe size and a schedule or weight class. Its outside diameter may remain constant across schedules while wall thickness, inside diameter, weight, and properties change.

Common context

Common project roles include columns, braces, posts, rails, supports, and exposed round framing where the specified pipe product is appropriate.

Detailing watch

Verify product specification, schedule, wall thickness, end preparation, connection fit, galvanizing or venting, and do not assume pipe and round HSS requirements are interchangeable.

How to read the PIPE records

Read the Manual label and EDI identifier together. A schedule identifier and a STD, XS or XXS label can describe the same listed row; nominal pipe size is not generally the measured outside diameter.

For geometry, compare OD, ID, tnom and tdes. Preserve the product specification separately and do not treat round HSS as an automatic replacement.

This dataset contains 51 PIPE records, with nominal weights from 0.85 to 136 lb/ft and listed outside diameter values from 0.84 to 26 in. These ranges describe the published records, not current supplier inventory or a selection recommendation.

Start with the exact designation, open its full record, then compare only the dimensions and properties relevant to your task. For example, Pipe16XS lists 82.9 lb/ft, 22 in² area, Ix = 665 in⁴ and Iy = 665 in⁴. The x and y labels retain the database axes; their values do not establish allowable loads.

The AISC v16.0 workbook Readme defines the variables and shape figures. This directory uses the US customary record; the comparison tool converts displayed units. Check the required edition and product specification before transferring data.

Worked quantity example

Nominal weight for Pipe16XS

Assume 3 pieces, each 20 ft (6.096 m) long. This is a hypothetical quantity example, not a stock-length or lifting recommendation.
