W12x26 vs W12x40: Same Depth Family, Different Beam
Compare W12x26 and W12x40 dimensions, weight, flange width, stiffness, and connection implications before treating two W12 beams as equivalent.
Long-form field guide · 11:30
Build a traceable structural steel takeoff: define scope, count members, label lengths and units, calculate nominal weight, document allowances, and compare revisions.
Practical context
Start with an identifiable drawing and specification baseline, then connect each quantity to a location and source. This field guide follows a fictional four-beam example through length, nominal weight, unit conversion, and a revision delta. Keep measured quantities, allowances, and purchasing adjustments distinct, and record the intended use and review status of the final material list.
Educational estimating and coordination examples only. Current contract documents, adopted standards, and the responsible project professionals control actual work. This video does not authorize design, procurement, fabrication, modification, or erection.

Companion reading and practice
For a fictional list of four W18X35 members at 20 ft each, the nominal weight calculation is 4 × 20 × 35 = 2,800 lb. That arithmetic depends on both the piece count and the length unit.
The result covers the listed members only. Plates, fasteners, allowances, and other scope need separate records. Preserve the drawing issue and the reason for each allowance so a revision can be compared with the same basis instead of a newly interpreted total.
Enter the example in Material Takeoff, then change the quantity to five and confirm a 700 lb increase.
