A change is controlled only when the team can identify its source, decision, affected scope, implementation, reviewer, and downstream status. An RFI, sketch, cloud, or email alone does not complete that chain.
Direct answer
What makes a structural steel RFI easy to answer?
An answerable RFI identifies one issue, the exact project location and source revision, the direction needed, the required response date, and any known schedule or cost impact.
Cite the drawing, detail, grid, level, member, specification section, model view, and current revision that establish the conflict. Use a marked-up view when geometry is hard to describe. A suggested solution can help, but it must not conceal missing design authority or imply approval.
- Assign a unique number, author, date, and needed-response date.
- Ask one decision question.
- Attach only the context needed to understand it.
- Name affected work and any hold.
- Identify who is authorized to respond.
Term explained: RFI
A request for information: a documented question about an unresolved requirement or conflict. Its response must be followed through into affected records. Open the glossary entry.
Direct answer
When does an RFI response become usable project information?
A response becomes usable when its authority and contractual status are clear, it is recorded in the controlled project system, and its effect on drawings, models, specifications, and releases is understood.
Do not detach an answer from its question, attachments, date, or responder. If the response refers to a sketch or revised sheet, keep the reference with the record. If the answer is incomplete or conflicts with another source, return it for clarification instead of interpreting it silently.
Direct answer
Why are revision clouds not a complete change check?
Clouds are visual cues, not proof of the complete changed scope. A safe review compares the entire current issue, including notes, schedules, references, added information, deleted information, and related documents.
Clouding conventions vary by project. Trace each confirmed difference into affected members, connections, shop and erection drawings, bills of material, CNC files, purchase records, and field information.
Compare controlled issue to controlled issue. Do not compare a new sheet to an unknown local copy.
Term explained: Revision
An identified change to issued information. Read the issue record and related documents to establish what changed and which issue applies. Open the glossary entry.
Direct answer
How should a steel change be traced after approval?
Record every affected object and output, regenerate controlled deliverables, verify the result, and communicate the impact according to whether work is detailed, approved, released, purchased, cut, fabricated, coated, shipped, or erected.
A late revision is not one problem; it is a different problem at each downstream status. The change log should show source, owner, decision, affected scope, exceptions, implementation evidence, release time, and recipients.
Practice with a fictional example
Write one answerable question
Training sheet S201 revision B and detail 4/S501 revision A give different elevations for the same member. A note saying “please clarify steel” does not identify the conflict.
- Name the member, grid, both source references, and both stated elevations.
- Ask which requirement governs and identify the affected work.
- After receiving an authorized response, record the answer and list the drawings or outputs that need to change.
What a useful result looks like
The question and response are only part of the record. Closing the RFI should follow the project procedure and include checking its effect on the downstream package. The browser RFI tool records correspondence; it does not send the question or grant approval.

Explore the drawing and test your reading
Fictional learning activity. Choices stay in this page; they are not submitted or saved. The exercise checks information and arithmetic, not a design or release decision.
Original fictional issue extracts. Select the numbered markers or open the explanations below. Both differences are deliberate teaching examples. Scroll the illustration sideways on a narrow screen.
The clouded change is an elevation
The displayed top-of-steel value increases by 2 inches. Record the source issues and the affected member. This does not establish that a geometry change has been approved or that related records are current.
The quantity also changes outside the cloud
The material row increases from 2 to 3. The exercise deliberately leaves this change unclouded. A complete comparison should record both differences and reconcile their effects with the controlling information.
Spot the error: one change is outside the cloud
Compare the two fictional issue extracts below. The revision cloud highlights an elevation change, but the material row also changes from quantity 2 to quantity 3. Which review catches the full difference?
Reveal the answer and explanation
Answer: Record both differences and trace their downstream effects.
The training elevation changes from +100 ft 0 in to +100 ft 2 in, and the listed quantity changes from 2 to 3. A revision marker helps locate a change; it is not a substitute for comparing the affected information. Confirm the governing issue and authorization, then identify the model, drawings, list, and other outputs needing review.
