Right Model, Wrong Revision: A Hidden Steel Detailing Failure

Learn why correct steel geometry can still be wrong when it comes from a superseded drawing, RFI, addendum, or reference model—and how to trace every affected output.

Practical context

Steel detailing revision control across drawings, models, CNC data, and releases

A model built correctly from superseded information is not the current model for production.

A revision cloud is not a complete change check. Confirm the authorized source, trace every dependent output, compare regenerated deliverables, and remove superseded files from production locations.

Companion reading and practice

Can the model be traced to its source issue?

A training model matches the drawings used to create it, but a later issued sheet changes one member. The geometry can be internally consistent and still represent the wrong baseline.

Record source revisions before checking the model. When a new issue arrives, identify affected members, dependent outputs, and earlier approvals that need review. A file name containing “final” does not establish currency.

Try it with a sample

Add two issues of a sample sheet to the drawing register and identify which is current for the exercise.

Track the source drawing revisions

  1. A steel model can look coordinated, complete, and correct—and still be the wrong model for production.
  2. The hidden failure is revision identity: correct geometry built from a superseded drawing, RFI, addendum, or reference model.
  3. Before changing geometry, confirm the authorized source, document number, issue date, and revision.
  4. Then trace every affected member, connection, drawing, list, CNC file, released package, and production status.
  5. Revision clouds help, but they do not prove the rest of the sheet or its dependent outputs stayed unchanged.
  6. Regenerate what depends on the revision, compare the results, and remove superseded files from production locations.
  7. Record the source, affected scope, exceptions, reviewer, and explicit release decision.
  8. The right model on the wrong revision is still wrong. Learn revision control at Quantum Steel Design.
