Steel Piece Marks Connect the Model, Shop, and Field
Learn how structural steel piece marks connect model objects, shop drawings, material, fabrication records, shipping, and erection information.
Steel coordination explainer · 0:51
Build a useful structural steel RFI with exact source references, one clear issue, requested direction, impact context, and a controlled response record.
Practical context
An effective RFI identifies the exact project location, states one clear issue, requests direction, and preserves the response as controlled project information.
AI and detailers can organize the question, but authorized project parties provide direction. Contract documents and controlled responses remain governing project information.
Companion reading and practice
A fictional RFI says “beam elevation unclear.” A stronger record names B12, its grid location, both conflicting references, and the revisions being compared.
Ask one decision question and identify the affected work. Keep suggested options distinct from an approved direction. After a response, check its authority and record the downstream changes needed; merely receiving text does not complete the coordination process.
Draft the fictional question in the RFI log. The tool prepares local correspondence but does not send it.
Examples are fictional learning exercises. This companion text adds context to the video; the transcript below records the narration.
