Steel Piece Marks Connect the Model, Shop, and Field
Learn how structural steel piece marks connect model objects, shop drawings, material, fabrication records, shipping, and erection information.
Steel detailing explainer · 0:56
Follow engineering intent through coordinated steel geometry, connections, models, shop drawings, erection drawings, material lists, fabrication data, RFIs, and revisions.
Practical context
A structural steel detailer coordinates the geometry, connections, identifiers, drawings, lists, and data needed to fabricate and erect the defined scope.
The detailer works within defined responsibilities. Current contract documents, applicable standards, project engineering, and qualified review remain controlling.
Companion reading and practice
A training package shows a member and its location but leaves a connection requirement unresolved. Modeling the member is possible; completing the production information still needs direction.
Detailing connects design information to coordinated models and drawings. It also exposes missing or conflicting requirements so the responsible parties can resolve them. The ability to draw or automate a connection does not assign its design responsibility to the software operator.
List the information supplied, the information missing, and who needs to answer the remaining question.
Examples are fictional learning exercises. This companion text adds context to the video; the transcript below records the narration.
